WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN TRANSIT AUTHORITY SELECTS ZYLAB TO HELP FIGHT FRAUD AND THEFT; TRACK FARE CARDS

Agency Taps ZyIMAGE Document Imaging and Full-Text Retrieval Solution to Support Credit Debit and Fare Adjustment Divisions

Bagshot, February 23, 2004 - ZyLAB, an established market leader of document imaging and full-text retrieval software, today announced that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), operator of the second largest rail transit system and the fifth largest bus network in the United States, has selected ZyLAB to provide support for its Fare Distribution and Sales group. ZyLAB's document imaging and full-text retrieval solution, ZyIMAGE, is helping the Authority manage credit/ debit chargeback activity and also supports the fare adjustment tracking of fare cards that need to be replaced or adjusted.

"ZyIMAGE enables our organization to improve overall service-to-the-citizen by helping us collect and maintain information necessary for catching fraud and theft as well as instantly addressing customer inquiries," said a spokesperson at the WMATA. "When we set out to look at document imaging systems we met with several vendors but in the end we selected ZyLAB's ZyIMAGE solution based on its ease-of-use, ability to address our multiple requirements, and cost."

The Treasurer's Office is responsible for tracking credit card activity by customers generating several hundred thousand transactions per month. A percentage of those transactions prove to be invalid as a result of fraud or machine malfunction. Information related to stolen credit cards and charge backs is now scanned into the system and accessible from multiple WMATA locations. Using ZyIMAGE, WMATA users now have access to information instantly at their fingertips and can cut off a stolen credit card or begin investigating charge backs to see if there is fraudulent activity.

The Fare Distribution and Sales group is responsible for replacing damaged or malfunctioning passes and fare cards as well as providing refunds to customers as appropriate. Customers with damaged or malfunctioning passes are given a fare adjustment envelope that includes a receipt number that is mailed to the WMATA. ZyIMAGE plays a pivotal role in the retrieval process. As envelopes are mailed to the WMATA they are immediately scanned into the ZyIMAGE system. Now when a customer calls in looking to obtain a status on their fare card or refund, the information is found almost instantaneously via the scanned in receipt number.
